Thailand crash to another loss

Ratchapol Pu-Ob-Orm (James Wattana) and Dechawat Poomjaeng were in confident mood going into the Group B match after they beat the United Arab Emirates 4-1 on Tuesday.

But Malta's Tony Drago and Alex Borg proved too strong for the local favourites who only have a mathematical chance of progressing to the quarter-finals of the US$700,000 tournament.

Ratchapol gave Thailand 1 a 1-0 lead after beating Drago 52-44 only for Malta to race to a 3-1 lead with three points in a row. The Thais got a consolation point in the last singles when Dechawat saw off Drago 66-59.

Former world No.3 Ratchapol said Malta deserved the victory because they were the better team.

"I had a chance to be 2-2 but I failed," said Ratchapol.

Dechawat said it was almost impossible for the team to qualify for the next round, even if they beat China in their final group match.

"I think we have only one or two percent chance of qualification," said world champion amateur.

Thailand and Malta have seven points each after three matches while China, who beat UAE 3-2 last night, and Australia each have six and seven points respectively after two matches.

Each game has five images - four singles and one doubles. Each image is a point gained. The top two teams from each of the four groups advance to the knockout stages.

Drago said he was disappointed that his team lost two points against Thailand, which could cost them dearly after losing 3-2 to both China and Australia. "The two executives could kill us," said the veteran of 46 years.

Malta, United Arab Emirates are now in their final group match.

In Group A, Ken Doherty and Fergal O'Brien of Ireland defeated Egypt 4-1 to keep alive their chance of reaching the last eight after their 3-2 loss to Pakistan in their opening match.

Normally, it takes no more than two hours for each match to finish but the Ireland v Egypt match lasted nearly four hours.

Doherty, the 1997 world champion who is now ranked 28th in the world, offered an apology for the slow pace.
