Riverside High School Floods Again

MILWAUKEE -- The downpour was already over, but hours later an MPS maintenance worker could be seen in water just over his stomach. Several workers were busy behind Riverside High School where water formed into a small lake.

"It was pouring, pouring, pouring in sheets and...the manhole covers were exploding," said Nancy Riebe. Riebe was among a group of teachers watching as crews tried to clear the drains.

"I was just, I couldn't believe it," said Riebe. "Couldn't believe it. It was more than I had imagined."

The rain and some sewage rushed into the building.

"When it started we thought we could contain it by wet mopping it," said Principal Daniel Donder. "Then all of a sudden it just got out of control, and we had to evacuate that side of the building, and the kids that were here for recreation out."

In the cafeteria, one worker splashed through the first floor water. Officials with Milwaukee Public Schools said flooding was worse in the lower level.

"What you can see is the water is half way up the lockers," said Chris Levas, a Riverside High School engineering teacher. "So there's definitely going to be a lot of stuff that's lost."

Levas class is in the basement and, like most teachers, it does not remove items from last week when the school year ended.

"I did not even have the chance to spend anything," said Levasseur. "Work this week was to go through all technologies. It kind of fight. So what can you do? "

Many were frustrated at school on the east side, after the morning rain Monday. It looked like the floods in July 2010.

"I thought we had all assumed to be fixed, and it would be more problems," said Levasseur.

MPS said some work was done to help relieve flooding problems.

"It is just devastating for teachers and for us to see our classrooms destroyed, but we'll work on it," said Donder.
