Vancleave's Presley Owens named Mississippi Press girls athlete of the year

In a Vancleave High School senior class loaded with great athletes, Presley Owens stood almost literally head and shoulders above the rest.
   
The 6-foot-1 Owens starred in volleyball, basketball and softball as a senior, and today is named the inaugural Mississippi Press girls athlete of the year. The award is intended to signify the best athletic performance by a female high school athlete during the 2010-11 school year.
  
Owens beat several other candidates for the award, including Vancleave softball teammate Lindsey Webb, Gautier soccer player Ashley Johnson, George County softball standout Morgan Fairley and Ocean Springs eighth-grader Jade Kindsvater, who won her second straight 3,200-meters title at the state track meet.
   
Owens had scholarship offers in all three sports, but opted to sign with Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in basketball.
   
"She is just one of those kids, whatever she's involved in, she's going to give 110 percent," Vancleave girls basketball coach Raina Holmes said. "She's going to do whatever it takes to get better. Academics, athletics, anything she's involved in, she's focused and mentally prepared. She sets goals and strives for those goals. Her success was self-motivated."
   
Owens started at middle blocker for the Vancleave volleyball team, a perennial power that advanced to the Class II South State finals in 2009 and 2010. In fast-pitch softball, she went 7-2 with a 1.41 ERA to help the Bulldogs go 18-9 and win their division.
   
In basketball, she averaged 16 points and 12 rebounds, and was named the divisional MVP. With Owens starting in the post, Vancleave won the division title and advanced to the South State playoffs each of the last two seasons.
   
"I just took it as it came to me," Owens said. "I went from one sport to the next one.
