Even by the age of two a large percentage of pets already have some form of the disease.
Periodontal (gum) disease is defined as the destruction of tissues and structures supporting the teeth. It starts when plaque forms from bacteria combined with saliva and food debris. Plaque calcifies and becomes calculus (tarter) and starts to move under the gum line and cause inflammation (gingivitis). This is a reversible stage of gum disease which if not controlled will eventually cause tooth loss and serious health problems for the pet.
