Camp exposes children to an array of job skills
WATERLOO - What hair is quite close to human hair, it can be used for the practice of coloring and cutting?

"Horse?" Guessed child labor skills! a summer day camp at Conestoga College, in partnership with the college and Skills Canada. Now in its 10th year, the camp introduces students grades 7 and 8 to employment in the trades, hairdressing to the masonry.
The answer?
Yak.
Fun facts were simply part of the demonstration of hair Monday by Lina Shamoun, owner of Salon Artline Kitchener and a graduate of High School Skills Canada competition.
The national nonprofit promoting careers in skilled trades and technologies to Canadian youth through camps like this, contests and high school through the promotion of cooperative education programs.
"It was the experience with skills in high school that Canada made me realize that I wanted to be a hairdresser," Shamoun said, explaining that the reason she is so determined to promote the program.
She participates in the camp, which runs through the summer in 19 locations across the province, but is only in the region for the next three weeks.
She speaks at schools throughout the region to encourage students to pick co-op, apprenticeship and trade programs.
Shamoun spoke to a group of 17 children and young teens, teaching them about hair care and the science of colouring. Just three girls sat clustered in one corner of the room, which counsellors say is a bit lower than average but normal.
Most activities focus on the less sensitive occupations such as carpentry or plumbing, but they also include seminars on culinary arts and broadcasting.
"Boys are more convenient ... some girls do not want to get dirty, "said Sarah Bonhert, 12. But she says she does not matter if you're a boy or a girl, "if someone wants to be on their hands, they can be on your hands.
